Book Review | The Last Namsara by Kristen Ciccarelli

Title: The Last Namsara
Author: Kristen Ciccarelli
PublicationOctober 3rd 2017 by HarperTeen
Series: Iskari #1
Pages: 432
Genre: YA Fantasy
Copy: Bought
Summary: In the beginning, there was the Namsara: the child of sky and spirit, who carried love and laughter wherever he went. But where there is light, there must be dark—and so there was also the Iskari. The child of blood and moonlight. The destroyer. The death bringer.

These are the legends that Asha, daughter of the king of Firgaard, has grown up hearing in hushed whispers, drawn to the forbidden figures of the past. But it isn’t until she becomes the fiercest, most feared dragon slayer in the land that she takes on the role of the next Iskari—a lonely destiny that leaves her feeling more like a weapon than a girl.

Asha conquers each dragon and brings its head to the king, but no kill can free her from the shackles that await at home: her betrothal to the cruel commandant, a man who holds the truth about her nature in his palm. When she’s offered the chance to gain her freedom in exchange for the life of the most powerful dragon in Firgaard, she finds that there may be more truth to the ancient stories than she ever could have expected. With the help of a secret friend—a slave boy from her betrothed’s household—Asha must shed the layers of her Iskari bondage and open her heart to love, light, and a truth that has been kept from her.

Series: First in a Trilogy
Pages: 416
Genre: YA Historical Fantasy

Summary: The thrilling first book in a YA fantasy trilogy for fans of Red Queen. In a world where social prestige derives from a trifecta of blood, money, and magic, one girl has the ability to break the spell that holds the social order in place.

Sixteen-year-old Anna Arden is barred from society by a defect of blood. Though her family is part of the Luminate, powerful users of magic, she is Barren, unable to perform the simplest spells. Anna would do anything to belong. But her fate takes another course when, after inadvertently breaking her sister’s debutante spell—an important chance for a highborn young woman to show her prowess with magic—Anna finds herself exiled to her family’s once powerful but now crumbling native Hungary.

Her life might well be over.

In Hungary, Anna discovers that nothing is quite as it seems. Not the people around her, from her aloof cousin Noémi to the fierce and handsome Romani Gábor. Not the society she’s known all her life, for discontent with the Luminate is sweeping the land. And not her lack of magic. Isolated from the only world she cares about, Anna still can’t seem to stop herself from breaking spells.

As rebellion spreads across the region, Anna’s unique ability becomes the catalyst everyone is seeking. In the company of nobles, revolutionaries, and Romanies, Anna must choose: deny her unique power and cling to the life she’s always wanted, or embrace her ability and change that world forever.

The Alchemist Guild, down on Loom, may just hold the key to putting his kin in power, if Cvareh can get to them before the Dragon King’s assassins.

When Ari stumbles upon a wounded Cvareh, she sees an opportunity to slaughter an enemy and make a profit off his corpse. But the Dragon sees an opportunity to navigate Loom with the best person to get him where he wants to go.

Author: Kendare Blake
Publication: September 20th 2016 by HarperTeen
Series: Three Dark Crowns #1
Pages: 416
Genre: YA Fantasy
Copy: ARC received at YALLWEST
Summary: Every generation on the island of Fennbirn, a set of triplets is born: three queens, all equal heirs to the crown and each possessor of a coveted magic. Mirabella is a fierce elemental, able to spark hungry flames or vicious storms at the snap of her fingers. Katharine is a poisoner, one who can ingest the deadliest poisons without so much as a stomachache. Arsinoe, a naturalist, is said to have the ability to bloom the reddest rose and control the fiercest of lions.

But becoming the Queen Crowned isn’t solely a matter of royal birth. Each sister has to fight for it. And it’s not just a game of win or lose…it’s life or death. The night the sisters turn sixteen, the battle begins. The last queen standing gets the crown.

If only it was that simple. Katharine is unable to tolerate the weakest poison, and Arsinoe, no matter how hard she tries, can’t make even a weed grow. The two queens have been shamefully faking their powers, taking care to keep each other, the island, and their powerful sister Mirabella none the wiser. Crystal Crowned Cover Reveal + Giveaway!

Hey everyone!  I'm so excited to participate in the cover reveal of Crystal Crowned by Elise Kova today.  This is the very last book in the Air Awakens series, and seeing the cover has only made that reality so much more real.  While I'm so excited to read this book, I'm also really nervous for the characters' fates and sad that the series is coming to an end.

As for the cover, I am in love with this one!  I swear, these covers just keep on getting better and better, and Crystal Crowned did not disappoint!  The colors are beautiful, and I love Vhalla's look in this cover (her hair is finally brown hahaha).  She also just looks super badass, so that's always a plus.  Okay, okay, I think it's time for you guys to see the cover now...

Quick Reviews | Red Queen & Glass Sword by Victoria Aveyard

Everyone has been ranting about this series for literally ever (that is definitely not correct English), and I was so excited to finally pick it up!!  I have had Red Queen waiting on my shelf for quite a while now, but when I found a gorgeous signed hardcover of Glass Sword at Costco (literally cheap book heaven), it renewed my enthusiasm for these books.  After binge reading both books, I am now not-so-patiently waiting for the next book to come out, which, sadly, does not come out until next year :'(.  Until then, I decided to post quick reviews for both of these books, because sometimes you only need a few words to convey your feelings for an entire 400 page novel (okay let's be honest I'm just lazy)...

Red Queen (Red Queen, #1)Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

First 1/3 of this book: It's okay I guess...
Second 1/3: Really, what is all the hype about??
Last 1/3: WAIT. WHAT??? WAIT WHAT?!?!?! NOOOO WAIT WHAT OHMYGOD NOO AHHH I NEED THE NEXT BOOK RIGHT NOW

Glass Sword (Red Queen, #2)Glass Sword by Victoria Aveyard

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book is so freaking good but that ending actually killed me. I am writing from the grave to tell you that reading this book when the third book is still a year away was a bad idea!!!

View all my reviews

Let me know if you have read one or both of these books, or want to read them in the comments below!  If you have read them, what did you think?
