Now she can’t stop seeing the ghosts of her family members, which haunt her with memories of how life used to be back when her biggest problem was the kiss she shared with her best friend Hanna.

After the accident, Laurel and her dad are left to pick up the pieces of their shattered lives. Her dad is struggling with his grief and depression, unable to cope with the loss of his family. He seeks a way out of his pain, leaving Laurel behind while he struggles to cope with his own mental illness. She is desperate to find a way to hold everything together again and help her father come to terms with the loss so he can come back to her.

Laurel tries to make sense of her pain with the help of her grandparents, her two best friends, and some random strangers. As she struggles to understand who she is without her family, she must come to terms with the items on her List of Things Not to Talk About, learn to trust her dad again, and—on top of it all—keep her heart open to love in the wake of her immense loss, eventually learning that it’s okay to not be okay.

I tend not to read many books like this that center around loss, but I'm so glad I decided to give this one a try; I zoomed through this book in only a few hours and experienced so many intense emotions in that time. As someone who does not have a lot of experience with grief, especially not to the extent that Laurel deals with, this book gave me a real and raw look into what it might be like. I usually try to avoid thinking about losing people close to me, especially my family, but reading this book actually made me realize just how lucky I am to have them. There's nothing like reading a book like this to really snap into perspective how fragile life is and how important it is to cherish time spent with loved ones.

Moynihan does a fantastic job of creating relatable and lovable characters; I grew especially attached to Laurel and immensely enjoyed reading from her perspective. Even as she struggles with losing her family, coming to terms with her sexuality and her feelings for her best friend, and forgiving her dad and the man who killed her family, she still finds love and compassion in her heart for herself and others. Although reading about Laurel's struggles in such a candid way was hard, there were so many great moments and insights from her that got me through.

Moynihan's writing is beautiful and raw, and extremely impressive considering this is her debut. I can't wait to see what else she has in store for us in the future!

Bryce Davishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12074635705174367727noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7186464669607905739.post-9755616354563524622021-02-03T19:04:00.005-08:002021-02-04T20:20:11.181-08:00Can't Wait Wednesday | One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston

Book: ONE LAST STOP by Casey McQuiston

Expected Publication: June 1st, 2021 by St. Martin's Griffin

Why I'm Waiting: Casey McQuiston won me over back in 2019 with her new adult debut, RED, WHITE, & ROYAL BLUE. If you haven't yet heard, Elise Kova is releasing a new spin-off series for her best selling series, Air Awakens! I am a huge fan of Elise, and I absolutely adore her Air Awakens series, so I'm incredibly excited for this new series. I'm super happy to be able to share with you all the title, cover, and synopsis of the first book in the Air Awakens: Vortex Chronicles series!

So first off, we have the title... and it is....

VORTEX VISIONS!

Isn't that badass!? I'm super curious to find out what it means...
And next we have the synopsis:

SYNOPSIS:

A desperate princess, a magical traveler, and a watch that binds them together with the fate of a dying world.

Vi Solaris is the heir to an Empire she’s barely seen. Her parents sacrificed a life with her to quell a rebellion and secure peace with a political alliance. Now, three years past when her wardship should’ve ended, Vi will do anything to be reunited with her family.
The Empire is faltering beneath the burden of political infighting and a deadly plague. Yet, Vi can’t help but wonder if her inability to control her magic is the true reason her parents haven’t brought her home. Suspicion becomes reality when she unleashes powers she’s not supposed to have.
Powers that might well cost her the throne.
As Vi fights to get her magic under control, a mysterious stranger appears from across the world. He holds the keys to unlocking her full potential, but the knowledge has an unspeakable price — some truths, once seen, cannot be ignored.
All eyes are on her and Vi must make the hardest choice of her life: Play by the rules and claim her throne. Or, break them and save the world.

Ahhhh doesn't that sound amazing!? I'm so freaking excited that we get to meet Vhalla's daughter, and she seems like she's going to live up to Vhalla's badass reputation.

Last but not least... it's cover time!
Y'ALL. The hype is real. This book was everything I was hoping for and more! I love me a good sister story and although duel POV can be rough at times, it totally worked for this book. Both Nomi and Serina were well-developed, badass characters, and let me tell you, the character development in this book is CRAZY! I freaking loveeddd Serina's journey and how she grew as a character, and I can't wait to see how both girls continue to develop in the rest of the series! Especially after that cliffhanger....

Genre: NA Fantasy
Copy: Arc provided by publisher in exchange for an honest review
Summary: First book in the Wish Quartet, a new-adult, urban fantasy series set in a near-future alternate reality

BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR.

Josephina Espinosa makes her living as a hacker-for-hire in the Lone Star Republic, a remnant of the fractured U.S.A. That is, until the day she and her best friend are gunned down in a government raid.

With her dying breath, Jo uses magical lore passed down from her grandmother to summon a wish-granter. Her wish? To save her friend’s life. Except wishes have costs, and for Jo, the price is the erasure of her entire mortal existence.

Now, as the most recent addition to the mysterious Society of Wishes, Jo must form a new “life” alongside the seven other members, one of which being her savior himself. Living as an occupant of the Society’s lavish mansion should be quite the perk, but while it is furnished with everything its inhabitants could possibly need, it lacks one thing—freedom.

Her otherworldly identity crisis takes a backseat, however, when Jo learns that the friend she sacrificed everything for is headed down the same path to ruin. Jumping in head-first, Jo uses her newfound magical abilities to protect him, only to realize that the ripples of her actions have far-reaching consequences. When the Society’s aloof leader Snow decides to give her a taste of his own ancient magic, Jo discovers that there are threads woven into the tapestry of her new reality that reach far beyond the wishes she is now required to grant. Ones that, if tugged on, could mean the unraveling of the world itself.

Anyone who knows me knows I'm a huge fan of Elise and her writing, so when I got the opportunity to read this new book that she co-authored with Lynn Larsh, I was so excited to read it!!

This book is definitely nothing like Elise's previous books, which I was kind of expecting based on the synopsis and the fact that this book has a new perspective and writing with the addition of Lynn as a co-author. However, continuing her trend for badass MCs, Jo is just as spunky and fun as I expected her to be. These authors did a great job creating amazing characters and a fun plot that was engaging and new.

My one concern for this book is that it's so SHORT. I mean, 230 pages might seem like a lot to some but for a YA or NA novel, it's short as hell. It's really hard to have a fully developed book with a plot that doesn't seem rushed in that many pages, and this book kinda fell into that hole. It was really hard to connect with the characters fully and give this plot the attention it deserves.

However, I still enjoyed this book and I can't wait to see what the next book has in store. Hopefully, it will be a little longer and give these characters the dimension that they deserve. Also, major creds for these authors having a Hispanic MC. I think a lot of us are still waiting on more diversity in the fantasy genre, especially in new adult, so it was nice to see some diversity in this book!

Overall, I'm recommending this to all my Elise fans out there as well as NA fantasy lovers!
Summary: Seventeen-year-old Abby Turner’s summer isn’t going the way she’d planned. She has a not-so-secret but definitely unrequited crush on her best friend, Cooper. She hasn’t been able to manage her mother’s growing issues with anxiety. And now she’s been rejected from an art show because her work “has no heart.” So when she gets another opportunity to show her paintings Abby isn’t going to take any chances.
Which is where the list comes in.
Abby gives herself one month to do ten things, ranging from face a fear (#3) to learn a stranger’s story (#5) to fall in love (#8). She knows that if she can complete the list she’ll become the kind of artist she’s always dreamed of being. But as the deadline approaches, Abby realizes that getting through the list isn’t as straightforward as it seems… and that maybe—just maybe—she can’t change her art if she isn’t first willing to change herself.

Ahhhh the comforting bliss of reading a Kasie West novel. These books are 100% my guilty pleasure books, except I'm not even guilty about it. I'm not going to argue against it; West's YA contemporary novels are not the most original or unpredictable. But, that doesn't stop me from enjoying them any less. I fall for her cutesy, fluffy love stories every time.

Okay, so I liked the idea of unrequited love and all that, but the ending just didn't sit very well with me this time. I don't know why, but I just wasn't rooting for the love story as much as I usually do. That being said, I did love the characters individually, and I loved Abby's arc throughout the book. Characters that were side characters in the book, such as Abby's mom and and granddad, were super well developed, and I loved how Abby had such a good relationship with her family, even when they fought or had some bumps in the road. I also liked how Abby's friendships meant just as much to her as her other relationships, and she didn't discard her friends to pursue a guy (one of my ultimate pet-peeves).

Overall, this book wasn't perfect for me, but I did enjoy reading a nice, light, fluffy read, especially since I'm on break and not having to read textbooks all day! If you like Kasie West or if you like light contemporaries, then I would definitely recommend this one!

Title: Our Dark Stars
Author: Audrey Grey and Krystal Wade
Publication: January 2nd 2018
Series: Standalone
Pages: 316
Genre: YA Sci-Fi
Summary: While she sleeps, the whole universe changes.

Princess Talia Starchaser has it all. Wealth. Status. Adoring citizens. But on the eve of her eighteenth birthday, she’s forced to publicly betray her best friend, a companion mock she’s had since birth, setting events into motion that lead to the destruction of the humans, and the princess floating through space, a remnant of a time when humans ruled over droids.

One hundred years later, half-mock captain Will Perrault and his ragtag crew discover a device floating in space. When a very human Talia emerges from its depths, Will suspects she’s the key to buying his way back into the regiment he once commanded against the last remaining rebel humans—and the ruling mock queen’s good graces.

Both Talia and Will would rather get space-tossed than trust one another, but with the queen’s forces chasing them across the galaxy and the fate of both worlds hanging in the balance, they’ll forge the unlikeliest of alliances to survive.

When I first read this summary, I knew I wanted to read this book ASAP! I love a good space adventure, and I love how some robot and AI elements were included in this. I was also getting some major Cinder vibes and I was totally down for that.

The characters in this book are super lovable, and I grew to love them all throughout the book. There was also a strong plot and great-world building, which are essentials for any good sci-fi. However, there was only one problem that I had with this book. I feel like this story would have done much better as two or three books instead of one. The story and characters were too complex to be fully developed in only 316 pages, and the ending felt super rushed. Which was super disappointing, because the beginning was so good!

Overall, I wish that the authors would have given this story justice and developed it more, but in the end I enjoyed reading it, and it was a fun read. This book was released on January 2nd 2018 as a part of a boxed set called Wrath and Ruin, but it's being re-released as an individual title later on, so if you can't find any hard copies being sold anywhere, that's why! I'll leave links to the book on Goodreads and the boxed set on Amazon and B&N (it's only $0.99 for like 24 e-books).

Let me know if you guys have heard of this book and if you want to read it or not in the comments below!

Expected Publication: January 9th 2018 by Disney-Hyperion

Why I'm Waiting: Y'ALL. Okay, we already know how epic Amie and Meagan are. But together, they are EPIC. I mean, just look at the Starbound trilogy a.k.a one of my favorite series of all time. I don't know how these two do it, but they never fail to write kickass characters and an overall crazy, fun story. So I'm super excited to see what these two do with this new series! Also, I'm majorly hyped because ALIENS and SPACE!!! Also, two unlikely friends thrown together on an epic journey? Sign me up please. You better believe I'm gonna be hauling my ass to B&N on the 9th to go grab myself a copy, and I can't wait to read the rest of the day away in utter bliss.

So in case you don't stalk Book Outlet on Twitter like I do, there was a big Boxing Day sale this past week, and if you're anything like me, it's literally impossible to resist a good book sale. As soon as I saw the tweet, I just had to take a peek at the website. Before I knew it, my cart had six books and I was checking out. Point being: I have no self control and I need someone to take my debit card away from me any time I even consider shopping online for books.

Anyway, here's my Book Outlet haul from the Boxing Day sale! Let me know if you've read any of them, or if you also have no self control and bought too many books during the sale...

1. And I Darken by Kiersten White

Okay, I've literally been meaning to read this book for forever. It came out in June of 2016, and I've been meaning to read it ever since! There were so many times where I was browsing Barnes & Noble and I saw this book and wanted to buy it, but I just never got around to picking it up. Luckily, this was the perfect chance to snag a copy. Hopefully this one lives up to my expectations!

2. Saint Anything by Sarah Dessen

Another book that I've been hearing about for a long time but never got around to reading. I've read a few Sarah Dessen books before and enjoyed them, so I'm sure this will be a great read!

3. When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon

There's been quite a lot of hype for this book! I've been hearing good reviews, so I'm excited to read this one.

Summary: In the beginning, there was the Namsara: the child of sky and spirit, who carried love and laughter wherever he went. But where there is light, there must be dark—and so there was also the Iskari. The child of blood and moonlight. The destroyer.
These are the legends that Asha, daughter of the king of Firgaard, has grown up hearing in hushed whispers, drawn to the forbidden figures of the past. But it isn’t until she becomes the fiercest, most feared dragon slayer in the land that she takes on the role of the next Iskari—a lonely destiny that leaves her feeling more like a weapon than a girl.

Asha conquers each dragon and brings its head to the king, but no kill can free her from the shackles that await at home: her betrothal to the cruel commandant, a man who holds the truth about her nature in his palm. When she’s offered the chance to gain her freedom in exchange for the life of the most powerful dragon in Firgaard, she finds that there may be more truth to the ancient stories than she ever could have expected. With the help of a secret friend—a slave boy from her betrothed’s household—Asha must shed the layers of her Iskari bondage and open her heart to love, light, and a truth that has been kept from her.

Okay, first of all: DRAGONS!!!! I've been waiting a very long time for a good fantasy with dragons, because it's so hard to do a dragon book justice. So when I saw this book pop up on Epic Reads' FIRST5, I was excited to give it a try. After reading the first two chapters, I didn't even need to read the rest of the preview to know that I wanted to read this book. I was immediately sucked into the story, and I ended up reading the entire thing in one sitting (which is very rare for me for a longer fantasy book).

I love the characters in this book, especially the MC, Asha. She's so badass, and even though I didn't exactly agree with her actions in the beginning of the book, she went through some solid character development throughout the book, and I loved the courage it took for her to have her whole world turned upside down and still fight for what she believes in.

Overall, I'm so happy that I gave this book a try, and if you love dragons as much as I do, this is a must read! Let me know if you've read this book yet, or if you want to read it, and any other thoughts in the comments!

Summary: Lena Wise is always looking forward to tomorrow, especially at the start of her senior year.

I literally don't understand how everything JLA writes is automatically addicting. The second I cracked into this book I knew I was in for a good day of reading. JLA isn't afraid to dig deep with this book and explore the idea that just because you make a mistake doesn't make you a bad person. This hit really close to home for me, because someone I'm really close with dealt with something similar. This book really nails the guilt and all of the other feelings that come with something like this on the head. I love that this book acknowledges that what Lena did was wrong, but it also acknowledges that it doesn't make her a bad person, and that she can live a normal life without being weighed down by guilt.

This goes without saying, but of course I loved the characters and the relationships in this book, and overall, this is another solid read by Jennifer. As always, I'll be looking forward to her next release!

Let me know in the comments if you've read it yet and how you liked it!
Soon after the experiment begins, there’s a malfunction with the lab equipment, and Cata and six other teen patients are plunged into a shared dreamworld with no memory of how they got there. Even worse, they come to the chilling realization that they are trapped in a place where their worst nightmares have come to life.
I can't remember the last time that I read a thriller, but I have been craving one for so long, so this was perfect for me! It's a mix of Nightmare on Elm Street and The Matrix, and yeah, it's just as trippy as you would think. As someone who has vivid nightmares, this was especially creepy to read. The characters all have terrible insomnia (hello?? I HAVE INSOMNIA) and they will do anything to just get some sleep. So the sciency people decide to pretty much electrocute these kids until they can sleep normally. Nice. I don't know how scientifically accurate this concept is, but I'm gonna give the author the benefit of the doubt on this one.

The characters are all super unique, and I liked how each of them took a different approach to this whole "we're all stuck in continuous nightmares together and we don't know when/if it will end" situation. I also liked how there was an outside perspective, so we got a glance at what was happening IRL.

As for the actual nightmares, they were pretty darn creepy. One nightmare in particular literally made me nauseous at the thought of it. I wanted to know so badly how they were gonna get out of this mess, but alas, CLIFFHANGER. Augh. Time to wait a million years for the sequel...

Overall, I am recommending this book to anyone who has been looking for a thriller! Let me know what you think in the comments below!
Summary: Seventeen-year-old Molly Peskin-Suso knows all about unrequited love. No matter how many times her twin sister, Cassie, tells her to woman up, Molly can’t stomach the idea of rejection. So she’s careful. Fat girls always have to be careful.
Then a cute new girl enters Cassie’s orbit, and for the first time ever, Molly’s cynical twin is a lovesick mess. Meanwhile, Molly's totally not dying of loneliness—except for the part where she is. Luckily, Cassie's new girlfriend comes with a cute hipster-boy sidekick. If Molly can win him over, she'll get her first kiss and she'll get her twin back.
There's only one problem: Molly's coworker, Reid. He's a chubby Tolkien superfan with a season pass to the Ren Faire, and there's absolutely no way Molly could fall for him.
Right?
I absolutely loved Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, so I had high hopes for this book. Luckily, it lived up to my expectations!! This is another adorable contemporary that just makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside the entire time you're reading it. I flew through this book in a day, and it was such a fun and easy read, which was exactly what I needed.

Like with Simon, my favorite part about this book is the characters. Molly is so sweet and adorable and I just wanted to hug her. Cassie probably more like me: outspoken and a little mean sometimes. But I loved her just as much. Even the supporting characters are all lovable in their own ways. Mina is also incredibly sweet, so she & Cassie balanced each other out perfectly. And both Will & Reid are freaking adorable too; basically everyone is adorable.

I loved the romance in this book, especially with our MC, Molly, but I also liked the other relationships. I loved Molly's family, especially with the dynamic of her having two moms. And I loved how close Molly and Cassie were. I have a sister that I'm super close with, so it was totally relatable for me.

Overall, I definitely enjoyed this book, and if you loved Simon as much as I did, definitely pick up this book!! And let me know in the comments if you've read it yet and how you liked it!
With savings from her gig at the Magic Pumpkin food truck (and her dad’s old costume), Elle’s determined to win…unless her stepsisters get there first.
Teen actor Darien Freeman used to live for cons—before he was famous. Now they’re nothing but autographs and awkward meet-and-greets. Playing Carmindor is all he’s ever wanted, but Starfield fandom has written him off as just another dumb heartthrob. As ExcelsiCon draws near, Darien feels more and more like a fake—until he meets a girl who shows him otherwise. But when she disappears at midnight, will he ever be able to find her again?
Part romance, part love letter to nerd culture, and all totally adorbs, Geekerella is a fairy tale for anyone who believes in the magic of fandom.

This book is absolutely adorable. As a fangirl, I found myself totally falling in love with Elle and her obsession with Starfield. I love the "celebrity and normal person fall in love" trop with a passion, so this book was pretty much perfect for me. Also, there's a ton of diversity. which is always awesome to see!!

Elle is so sweet and adorable like her retelling counterpart, Cinderella. But she also has a sarcastic side to her, especially when it comes to Darien, which I loved. I wish she would have stood up for herself a little more when it came to her stepsisters and stepmom. Speaking of them, yep, you guessed it: they're horrible. One of her stepsisters is particularly nasty. If I would've been there I would have bitch-slapped her from here to the next galaxy. But, I get it, it's Cinderella, she's too nice to do something like that. Luckily, she has her faithful sidekick, Sage. Sage is probably my favorite character in this entire book. She literally doesn't give a f***, and it's amazing. She stood up for Elle and showed her what true friendship is, and she's pretty much my hero.

As for the romance, it was just as adorable as you're expecting. Darien is sweet but with the perfect amount of asshole added in (and he's also POC!). Elle doesn't let him push her around, and their relationship has a nice slow-burn that makes the ending that much better.

Overall, I definitely recommend this book to my fellow geeks out there! You will fall in love with this book and the characters. Let me know if you've read it yet, or if you want to in the comments!

This is a cute, simple, coming-of-age story about Sal, who is you're average but adorable MC who is just trying to figure life out. As a senior in high school, I related to this book so hard. Except Sal and the other characters in this book are going through so much more than just college apps and figuring out what to do with their lives. They also are dealing with much heavier subjects, like loss of family members & family issues.

I loved how Sal has such a strong relationship with his father. It seems like in most contemporarys, the MC is always fighting with or having problems with their parents. As someone who has a strong relationship with my family, I've always wanted to see an MC who didn't fight with their parent(s), so that was nice to see. I also loved how Sal's dad kind of just adopted everyone and accepted Sal's friends for who they were. Honestly, his dad was probably my favorite character in the whole book. I aspire to be as good as a parent as he is.

While I love a good romance, I'm glad there wasn't any romance in this book, especially since the MC and his best friend, Sam, are both straight. This book took the myth that a straight guy and girl can't be friends and stomped all over it.

I loved the writing style and how short the chapters were. It made this book fly by despite the heavy subjects. The only reason why this isn't a 5-star for me is because I felt like it was a little too slow. I found myself a little bored at some parts. But overall, this is a great coming-of-age read for all contemporary lovers out there!

Hello, people who've read Last Stand! Are you okay? Because I'm definitely not. Okay, I knew this book was going to be painful when I finished Candidate. We all knew it was going to go downhill from there. But nothing could have prepared me for this book.

The whole section of Ryiah plotting behind Darren's back for the rebels was so heartbreaking. I knew she was making the right choice by not telling him, but at the same time, it was killing me because I knew he would find out sooner or later. And it was definitely sooner. I didn't see the whole map-scheme coming AT ALL. When Blayne and Mira showed up, my heart literally stopped beating for a second. And when Darren found the map, I was just screaming "NOOOOOO!!!!" in my head the entire time. I knew he wouldn't believe her, but it hurt so bad to see him turn against her. And the torture scenes!! My heart kept breaking over and over for both Ryiah and Darren having to go through that.

And just when I thought things might not be so bad when Paige rescued her and told Darren had been behind it, IT GETS EVEN WORSE. Blayne freaking hiding the fact that he has magic?!?! Definitely did not see that coming. And when he killed Wolf, and then PAIGE. Paige was one of my favorite characters, and she did NOT deserve that death. Not gonna lie, when Ryiah finally killed him, I wasn't the least bit sad. GOOD RIDDANCE. But then, of course, Darren shows up, and then things really go downhill. He blames her for Blayne's death, which was expected, but then he also blames her for killing Wolf and Paige?? Excuse me, WHAT?!?! Like I know he thinks she's a traitor and he's in shock, but why would she kill them???

The next section of this book was pretty just me in shock. When Mira kills all of those villagers, and Ryiah finds out Darren is king, I was just like, "Kill me. Kill me now." And when Ryiah makes the plan to try and talk to Darren one last time, I held onto that hope that Darren would be like, "I believe you now. Let's stop this war and run off into the sunset together!" Aaaand, that didn't happen.

After Eve died in Apprentice and they explained what a "last stand" was, I knew Ryiah was going to have her last stand. I honestly went into this book expecting Rachel to pull an Allegiant on us. When she stabs herself and the chapter ends and then it shows up with the definition of a last stand, I almost put the book down. I did NOT want to turn the page and see that it was Darren's POV. But nope, THEY'RE BOTH ALIVE.

And then they get their happily ever after, right. Lmao nope! First, they have to save Darren from being EXCECUTED. The whole time I was sick to stomach becuase I was nervous that Ella, Alex, or Ian would be killed. AND THEN Priscilla shows up like "yeah I knew you guys were gonna save him the whole time; who do you think told the guards to feed you info?" YAASSS QUEEN. Honestly, Priscilla will always be one of my favorite characters. Seriously, she's so freaking badass.

But do they get a happily ever after now? NOPE. Because Darren wakes up and immediately wants to go back. It was so heartbreaking to see Darren finally break. He's been fighting for so long, but he can't forgive himself for what he did. It was so sad, but also so frustrating because he was ignoring what Ryiah was going through. After the heartbreaking scene with the knife, Darren finally decides to fight. AND THEN we finally get our happy ending.

The epilouge is so bittersweet. After everything, Ryiah and Darren finally got their happy ending. Thinking back to First Year and seeing how much they had to go through to get there made me cry so hard. They have a daughter, Eve (picturing Darren as a father literally makes me want to die of happiness), and finally get to go back to Jerar and see everyone after 8 years. And then Ryiah and Darren get offered positions at the Academy, and I died. It was seriously so perfect. Again, bittersweet becuase of what they went through on the way there, but it was nice to see them finally get the ending they deserved.

Okay, wow. That was long. If you made it through all that ranting, I applaud you. What did you guys think about this book? Let me know in the comments!

My song rec for this book is Down by Brandyn Burnette. This song is so good! It has the same darker tone as this book, and if you read the lyrics, they go really well with this whole series!

I loved The Great Hunt, so I was super excited to read this book!! Although this duology is fantasy, I found these books super easy to read. I flew through this book in two days! I liked the different POVs, and although there are a lot of characters, I found myself connecting to all of them.

Aerity is definitely my favorite character. She's so strong, and I love how she accepts everyone despite the hatred and fear that others display, especially towards the Lashed. She is willing to give up so much for her people, despite the consequences. And her relationship with Pax!! My heart hurt for them the entire book, because they both knew how things were going to end, but they both held onto that love. Pax is so sweet and continues to be faithful to Aerity even when he thinks that he'll never see her again.

I also love Wyn and Vixie. I felt so bad for Wyn having to struggle with finding love again, but I love how things worked out for her in the end! And Vix is so cute, although it was kind of weird that she likes the brother of the guy her sister is in love with?? I love her and Tiern, but I can't be the only one that thought that was a little uncomfy...

Overall, this book has the perfect, feel-good ending, and I'm so happy that I decided to give this duology a try. It was honestly so nice to read a fantasy book where characters aren't dying left and right. I would definitely recommend these books if you want a lighter fantasy read!!

Summary: Sophia has seven days left in Tokyo before she moves back to the States. Seven days to say good-bye to the electric city, her wild best friend, and the boy she’s harbored a semi-secret crush on for years. Seven perfect days…until Jamie Foster-Collins moves back to Japan and ruins everything.

Jamie and Sophia have a history of heartbreak, and the last thing Sophia wants is for him to steal her leaving thunder with his stupid arriving thunder. Yet as the week counts down, the relationships she thought were stable begin to explode around her. And Jamie is the one who helps her pick up the pieces. Sophia is forced to admit she may have misjudged Jamie, but can their seven short days of Tokyo adventures end in anything but good-bye?

This is a good book. The writing is great, the setting is amazing, the characters are well-written and likable. This would be a solid 4.5 even 5 stars from me if it weren't for one thing. Sophia. I swear, I tried to get over it. I tried to accept her for who she is and just move on. But OH MY GOD. She's pretty much everything I hate in an MC. She constantly feels sorry for herself. She gets jealous literally every two seconds. She says dumb shit but instead of apologizing like a normal person she wallows in self pity. I'm sorry, I just can't. If I can't connect or at least empathize with the narrator of a book, I just can't fully enjoy it. Which really sucked in this case, because as I said before, this is a really good book!
I LOVED the setting. As someone who's never been outside the US, I love getting to experience other countries and cultures through books. Reading this book made me want to go to Tokyo so bad!
I also really liked pretty much every other character besides Sophia. Mika and David were so hilarious, and they seemed like such fun friends to have. I really liked Caroline, and it pissed me off that Sophia was so mean to her just because she was jealous of her. I also really liked Alison, and I loved their sibling relationship. And then there's Jamie. Oh, Jamie. Sweet, innocent Jamie. I loved him so much, and I just wanted to hug him and tell him that he deserves so much better than Sophia. Even though their relationship was super cute, I couldn't fully get into it because I was just so mad at Sophia the entire time.
Overall, this is just a case of a bad MC ruining a perfectly good book. If you are not like me, and you're okay with reading from the POV of someone who's a little frustrating, I would say go for it.
What do you think? Are you going to read this book? If you've already read it, what did you think? Let me know in the comments!
Seventeen-year-old Ruby is a Fireblood who has concealed her powers of heat and flame from the cruel Frostblood ruling class her entire life. Now she has only one chance to destroy the maniacal ruler who has taken everything from her—and from the icy young man she has come to love.

I have been on such a fantasy kick lately, and this was the perfect read for me. The MC, Ruby, is a strong lead hell-bent on revenge for her mother. She has a sarcastic humor that I loved, and she isn't afraid to speak up for what she believes. She is also just a good person, and she is willing to risk herself to save or heal others, which I loved. I also loved Arcus, and their romance. I love the back-and-forth quick-witted lines between them, and their slow-burn romance was perfect for the story.

The magic in this book is so cool! I love the concept of having fire vs. ice with the frostbloods and firebloods. The fight scenes were so epic, and I could totally picture this book as a movie or TV show! The setting overall was fun to picture, because of all the stuff made out of ice. I mean, aesthetic.

If you guys have read some other reviews, then you know that this book is all kinds of awesome. I definitely am recommending it to all my fantasy lovers out there!

My song rec for this book is Pray (Empty Gun) by Bishop Briggs. I love Bishop, and this song totally fits with this book! I feel like the lyrics work for both of the main characters, and I loved listening to them while reading this book.

So, it's been a very long time since my last venture into the world of YouTube. Most of you probably don't even know I have a channel. For those of you who don't know, my one love besides books is music. So I made a YouTube channel about a year and a half ago to do covers of songs. I only got two videos up before I had some medical stuff come up and I had to focus on that instead. But I was able to get in the recording studio a few days ago and get a couple of songs recorded, so I'm gonna try and start posting again!

Anyway, here's my cover of Simple as This by Jake Bugg. I love this song so much, and I tried really hard to put my own spin on it. I hope you guys like it!
Summary: Noemi Vidal is a teen soldier from the planet Genesis, once a colony of Earth that's now at war for its independence. The humans of Genesis have fought Earth's robotic "mech" armies for decades with no end in sight.
After a surprise attack, Noemi finds herself stranded in space on an abandoned ship where she meets Abel, the most sophisticated mech prototype ever made. One who should be her enemy. But Abel's programming forces him to obey Noemi as his commander, which means he has to help her save Genesis--even though her plan to win the war will kill him.
Together they embark on a daring voyage through the galaxy. Before long, Noemi begins to realize Abel may be more than a machine, and, for his part, Abel's devotion to Noemi is no longer just a matter of programming.

Okay, so when I first read the synopsis for this I got really excited because 1. SPACE BOOKS and 2. ROBOTS! I love learning about AI and wondering what will happen with it in the future, so it was super cool to see that come to life in this book. I also love exploring the controversy of what makes humans "human" and having souls and stuff. SO COOL. And this book did a pretty awesome job of taking that idea and turning it into a kickass story with amazing characters and world-building!

So our two MCs are Noemi and Abel. Noemi is from the planet Genesis, which is a colony of Earth. There are three other planets that have been colonized as well, called Stronghold, Kismet, and Cray. So what's the problem? Well, Earth is sort of dying. Humans trashed their own planet, so they're looking to others for salvation. But while Kismet, Stronghold, and Cray are able to take some of the people, there is not enough room for everyone. Enter, problem. Earth wants in on Genesis and their resources, but Genesis is like, "Gurl, no, this is our planet now," and they secede from Earth. Yeah, Earth doesn't like that. So now there is a war between Genesis and Earth, and Noemi is a soldier fighting for Genesis. Except they're not fighting against other humans from Earth, oh no. Earth fights dirty. Earth is sending these robots that they've designed to fight for them. They also have robots, that cook, clean, entertain, and do pretty much everything else for them.

Abel is from Earth, and yes, you've guessed it (actually it says it in the synopsis): he's one of these robots. Except he's special. Unlike every other robot, or mech, on Earth, he has been designed to be exceptionally intelligent. So much so that he surpasses AI and moves on to something completely different...

Noemi and Abel are thrust together to complete a mission that might be able to save Genesis, and Abel must help her because of his programming. But sooner or later he starts to become more than just his programming...and that's when things get interesting.

I loved all of the characters in this book, especially Noemi and Abel. Noemi is strong and so fiercely loyal, it almost makes your heart hurt because of how good she is. It took me a while to warm up to Abel, because..well..he's a robot. But having a POV by him was such a good idea, because even though it doesn't seem like it from the outside, you can tell that he has his own thoughts and ideas and personality. It was so cool to see him evolve as a character, because you can literally see him become human. Pretty damn awesome if you ask me. Besides our MCs, there's also some kickass side-characters as well, which only added to this story.

Overall, this is a solid 5 stars from me. This is pretty much everything I ever wanted from a book, and I don't know how I'm going to survive waiting for a sequel! If you like space books and AI and just sci-fi in general, definitely check out this book!

My song rec for this book is Soda Pop Fiction by Polyenso! Something about this song just makes me think about space and fight scenes in space. It's also just a pretty cool song, so definitely check it out.

Title: Blood Rose Rebellion
Author: Rosalyn Eves
Publication: March 28th 2017 by Knopf Books for Young Readers
Series: First in a Trilogy
Pages: 416
Genre: YA Historical Fantasy
Copy: ARC provided by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Summary: The thrilling first book in a YA fantasy trilogy for fans of Red Queen. In a world where social prestige derives from a trifecta of blood, money, and magic, one girl has the ability to break the spell that holds the social order in place.

Sixteen-year-old Anna Arden is barred from society by a defect of blood. Though her family is part of the Luminate, powerful users of magic, she is Barren, unable to perform the simplest spells. Anna would do anything to belong. But her fate takes another course when, after inadvertently breaking her sister’s debutante spell—an important chance for a highborn young woman to show her prowess with magic—Anna finds herself exiled to her family’s once powerful but now crumbling native Hungary.

Her life might well be over.

In Hungary, Anna discovers that nothing is quite as it seems. Not the people around her, from her aloof cousin Noémi to the fierce and handsome Romani Gábor. Not the society she’s known all her life, for discontent with the Luminate is sweeping the land. And not her lack of magic. Isolated from the only world she cares about, Anna still can’t seem to stop herself from breaking spells.

As rebellion spreads across the region, Anna’s unique ability becomes the catalyst everyone is seeking. In the company of nobles, revolutionaries, and Romanies, Anna must choose: deny her unique power and cling to the life she’s always wanted, or embrace her ability and change that world forever.

So when I read the summary for this book, I read "YA fantasy" and got excited. However, what the summary fails to mention is that this isn't just fantasy. Oh, no. It's historical fantasy. Some of you just started jumping up and down in your seats, but if you're anything like me, you just felt a wave of disappointment. I know, I know it's bad to judge a book like this, but I just don't like historical fiction. Or historical nonfiction. Just history in general. There have been a few exceptions, but overall, I just don't like books set in previous time periods (this book is set in the mid-1800s).

Like I said, though, there have been some exceptions, so I decided to forge ahead and try to like this book. And I almost did. Kind of. Okay, so let's just get into some of the pros of this book.

The writing is beautiful. There's some lovely imagery going on, and the world-building is on-point. There's magic and magical creatures. Not gonna lie, the first half of the book is pretty slow. However, the last half makes up for it with some nail-biting action!

Another thing that I enjoyed is that it's set in England, specifically Hungary. There were some German phrases and culture thrown in there, and a lot of the real history from this region and time period was woven in. Again, I feel like the history buffs of the world will enjoy this aspect a lot more. AND there's a pronunciation guide, so you're not pronouncing the German wrong the entire book.

Overall, this is a good book. It's just not for me. If I would have known it was historical fantasy, I probably never would have picked it up. Do I regret reading it? No. Will I read the second book. Probably not. It really all comes down to if this is your type of book or if it's not.

Do you guys like historical fiction/fantasy? Are you going to give this book a try? Let me know in the comments!

I first read this book a little over a year ago. At the time, I was in a horrible reading slump, and I didn't know how to get out of it. I'd hoped that reading this book would help, but it didn't. I finished the book, but I didn't really get to appreciate or enjoy it. I decided to put it off for a while and come back to it. Well, I finally had enough time to pick it up again, and I found out that Rachel was re-releasing the series, so I knew it was meant to be. I bought the new version and started reading it right away.

And boy, am I glad I decided to give this book another try, because I LOVED it!! I literally can't get all of my thoughts together to write this review because I'm so overwhelmed by how good this book is. The characters are amazing, the setting is amazing, the world-building is amazing, the magic is amazing. I'm 100% obsessed.

I love the magic-training school setting going on in this book. I think it goes back to my obsession with wanting to go to Hogwarts. But this is like Hogwarts on crack. The characters are pushed so far in this book. I was constantly amazed by the badassness of the characters that had to go through that.

Speaking of the characters, they were probably my favorite part of this book. Ryiah, our MC, is the most determined character I've ever met. She has such a tough time in this book, and it was so awesome to see her struggle so much to achieve her goal. This isn't like most books where the special snowflake MC has special abilities and is automatically the best. Ryiah is constantly fighting to keep up with the others, and she works twice as hard as everyone. My new motto for when I work out in the mornings is: "If Ryiah can survive The Academy, you can do a 20 minute work out".

And then there's Darren. Oh, Darren. How I want to punch you in the face. But I also love you. Kind of like someone else I know... Darren is the epitome of that asshole character that you're automatically obsessed with the entire book. And the banter between him and Ryiah is PERFECT. I'm such a sucker for enemies-to-friends-to-romance. Seriously, if you're not team Darren...what are you even doing with your life?

Okay, I think I'm done ranting about this book now. If you haven't read it yet, READ IT. I'm serious, you will thank me later. And it's only $0.99 on the Kindle right now, so you don't have any excuses!

My song recommendation for this book is Worth the Fight by Broods! Not gonna lie...I definitely stole this from Rachel. I saw somewhere that this was one of the songs that inspired her for this book, and I ended up listening to it all throughout the book. Broods is one of my favorite artists, but I had never heard this song before now. If you haven't listened to it, I definitely recommend it!
